ABOUT
For a school project, we hope to raise awareness of different issues people of our age within the LGBTQ+ community face, through creativity. Although the world is growing more tolerant towards this community, we feel that there is still a great portion of the world who do not understand, try to accept or validate the LGBTQ+ community.
Looking at our school itself, we constantly see younger year groups throwing out “insults” (i.e “you’re so gay”) - a lot of them treat words describing an individual’s sexuality as an insult, without hesitation or understanding the hardships that community has been through. Moreover, online, in the global community, you can see global citizens invalidating members of the LGBTQ+ community without living with consequences, or even go as far as homicide (eg. Orlando Nightclub shooting 2016).
Despite the media covering news about these issues and trying to raise awareness, it seems less impacting to many people in our local community, one reason could be because such events are happening too far away, or because our local LGBTQ+ community isn’t as visible. However, these are not excuses to simply dismiss the fact that there is a worldwide community facing this intolerance.
We chose to raise awareness through the form of our passions - visual art and writing. In our opinion, to help a cause, a person or a community using talents you are gifted with is basic human decency.
